What Is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint, or “TMJ” is the joint which connects your lower jaw to your skull. When this joint becomes stressed, misaligned, or injured, it leads to the development of a TMJ disorder. This may occur due to a number of factors, including stress, teeth grinding and clenching, arthritis, trauma, and injury to the head, neck, or jaw. TMJ disorders have a significant impact on your quality of life, affecting your ability to eat, yawn, speak and perform many other daily actions as well as causing pain and discomfort.

Common Symptoms of TMJ

Some Common Signs of a TMJ disorder can include:

Clicking or popping sounds when moving your jaw

  • Grinding sounds or sensations in the jaw
  • An inability to open your mouth wide to speak, yawn or chew
  • Locked or stuck jaw
  • Pain when moving the jaw, especially when chewing or biting
  • Frequent headaches, especially when waking
  • Pain in your neck, shoulders, and ears
